Mid-Atlantic Grid Automation
Project Name:
Mid-Atlantic Grid Automation
Client:
A major investor-owned utility in the DC Metro Area
Project location:
Washington, DC and Maryland
Project Scope:
34 & 13kV automated recloser installation
Challenge:
To improve system reliability, the client wanted to automate its grid. With a high volume of reclosers to be installed, the client needed a partner with the scale resources required to execute the work in a timely manner.
Solution
ULCS schedules outages and installations and provides QAQC inspections on every install to ensure adherence to standards. In conjunction with internal resources, ULCS is also managing equipment testing and service placement.
ULCS replaces and upgrades poles, wire and cable as needed to accommodate the automated reclosers. This work can consist of reconfiguring several spans of primary wire, installing and commissioning PAC cable, replacing spans of secondary cabling and installing transformers to supply control power to the devices. ULCS reporting provides the client with timely program status and confidence that program goals will be achieved.
Outcomes/Status:
The project is in process, and ULCS has been working without any safety incidents or environmental or compliance issues for nearly a year. The client extended ULCS’s contract to assure continued program performance.
