Underground cable replacement
CHALLENGE:
The underground cables along the National Mall, the Smithsonian and in front of the White House were
identified for replacement due to aged and deteriorating condition causing numerous streetlight outages
and posing a safety and security risk to pedestrians, motorists and property. Because the project would
require professional community relations, work area control and outage coordination, ULCS, a contractor
of choice (CoC) for more than 10 years, was chosen to help the long-term client replace the underground
cables feeding the streetlights and other premises in the high-profile and high-traffic area.

Aging house power panels (HPP) replacement:
CHALLENGE:
With an increasing number of HPPs failing, the utility determined to replace approximately 65,000 aging
meter base-breaker panel combinations on residential homes throughout the Carolinas.

A Fortune 500 integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production, transmission, and
distribution in the Deep South of the United States.

PROJECT SCOPE:
115kv line rebuild
CHALLENGE:
The 115kV Line is a critical source to the 115kV system in southeast Louisiana. In response to multiple
unplanned outages in area, the client inspected the line and determined mitigation was necessary because
of hurricane damage over many years. The line rebuild was designed to operate at 115kV but insulated at
230kV for operations at higher voltage to address future load growth and reliability needs. The line
traversed the wetlands at Jean Laffite National Wildlife Refuge and private properties, making the
project especially unique and environmentally sensitive.

Replacement of a concrete streetlight system
CHALLENGE:
In the residential area surrounding DuPont Country Club, streetlights were consistently going out. The
client investigated and determined the streetlight cables, structures and fixtures needed to be replaced
due to their aged and deteriorating condition. The energy company was keen to replace all while limiting
disturbance within the community and ensuring near-zero impact on the surrounding landscape.

AMI Communications Network make-ready design
CHALLENGE:
The client wanted to install automated smart meters across its service area and needed to ensure that
the AMI Communications Network was designed to be installed on distribution poles in accordance with
internal standards and applicable NESC codes.

CHALLENGE:
To improve system reliability, the client wanted to automate its grid. With a high volume of reclosers
to be installed, the client needed a partner with the scale resources required to execute the work in a

CLIENT:
Major Utility Customer on the Eastern Shore of Maryland
PROJECT LOCATION:
Eldorado, MD
PROJECT SCOPE:
Overhead to Underground conversion of the Three Phase electric line
CHALLENGE:
The installation of the Three Phase electric line was crossing the Marshyhope Creek near Eldorado, Maryland. This required 1400 linear feet of directional drilling under the creek in order to place the lines underground and retire the overhead lines without creating an environmental impact.

PROJECT SCOPE:
To secure a damaged fiber optic cable and prevent it from falling into the Mississippi River
CHALLENGE:
A fiber optic cable stretching between two towers and located more than 400 feet in in the air was identified as damaged and in need of emergency repair.

A not-for-profit rural electric utility cooperative headquartered in Florida.

Reconduct lines to feed a new spray field for a wastewater treatment plant
OUTCOME:
Changed out a single phase of #4 ACSR and neutral with 3 phase 1/10 and neutral. Crews also set all new poles and anchors.
